Gas Grill Safety

gasgrillsafety

Many of us use gas grills and I’m afraid that this familiarity with the 20 LP cylinders may cause us to become complacent. How many of us actually pay much attention to the safety procedures prescribed for this equipment? Please read and heed the following list of safety tips:

  • Never use or store cylinders indoors
  • Always keep cylinders upright
  • Always position cylinders so that connection between valve and regulator will not cause sharp bends in hose or tubing
  • Remember, these connector screw threads are backwards to what most of us are used to. To tighten, turn them left, or counter-clockwise only
  • Make sure this connector is free from any scratches or nicks which can cause leaks. If damaged, it should be replaced.
  • If your connector has a soft, rubber seal on its tip, be very cautious not to over-tighten
  • Always check your hose connection for leaks with a very soapy water solution. If bubbles appear and further tightening of the connector does not resolve the problem, close the valve and call your propane dealer

Gas Leaks

If you detect the "rotten egg" smell which indicates a gas leak:

  1. Do not turn electric switches on or off, light matches or do anything that could ignite gas
  2. Immediately get all people out of the dwelling, vehicle, trailer, etc.
  3. Close cylinder or tank supply valves. Do not turn on valves or re-enter the area until the leak has been corrected
  4. Call your propane dealer and the fire department, using a neighbor’s phone.

Why Are Gas Grills Dangerous?

  • Propane is a flammable gas which can cause fires and explosions
  • Propane is heavier than air and will collect along the floor and all low places
  • The expansion rate of propane is 270 to 1. Released from the tank, this is enough to fill your house and garage with highly flammable gas in seconds

Regulations

Please be aware that the use and/or storage of barbecue-type cooking equipment, or the fuels for same are not permitted on balconies of stacked multi-residential buildings or on flat roofs on any structure within the Cities of Anoka and Champlin.
